DISASTER PREPAREDNESS GAMES

Increasing community resilience through play.

Hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, tornados, wildfires, floods, heatwaves and superstorms.

Join us as we address these challenges through gaming.

THE STORY

In July 2011, Jenny Gottstein designed a Zombie Apocalypse Disaster Preparedness game in San Francisco.

With the help of her colleagues at The Go Game, she armed players with nerf guns and challenged them to run around the city completing missions they received on their smartphones. Some of the missions were ridiculous (zombie brain bashing target practice with... piñatas), but most were designed to foster basic disaster skills (learn how to bandage a burn wound, learn how to pack a survival kit, memorize emergency radio stations & plan evacuation routes). Meanwhile actors dressed as zombies chased players around the city, and the game culminated in a Thriller dancemob at a local park.

Since then The Go Game has designed games for earthquake preparedness, wildfire prevention and civic engagement. We have worked with government agencies, first responders, private companies and community leaders to turn disaster preparedness training into something that is accessible, memorable and fun.

THE TRIP

Last year, Jenny was accepted into the Millennial Trains Project - a non-profit organization that leads crowd-funded transcontinental train journeys for diverse groups of young innovators to explore America's new frontiers.

From August 6 - 17th 2014 she embarked on a cross-country train trip to scale the disaster preparedness game initiative. In the course of the trip, she met with first responders, community leaders, and creative thinkers to collect data and testimonials. Over the next few years, we will be rolling out more interactive games that help us address regional threats, such as tornados, hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and earthquakes.
